The Nurses Families Never Forget: Honoring Nurses Across Central Texas During National Nurses Week

There are moments during a health crisis that families never forget.

Sometimes it is the diagnosis.
Sometimes it is the late-night phone call.
Sometimes it is realizing a loved one may no longer be safe living alone.

But very often, when families later tell their story, they remember one person first:

“The nurse who helped us through it.”

At Oasis Senior Advisors Austin & Central Texas and Senior Industry Services, we work with families navigating hospital discharges, rehabilitation stays, memory care decisions, and major senior care transitions every day.

Again and again, we hear the same thing:

“The nurses were the first people who made us feel like we weren’t alone.”

During National Nurses Week, we want to recognize the incredible nurses serving seniors and families across Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Temple, Waco, Marble Falls, and communities throughout Central Texas.

The Power of Nurses During Senior Care Transitions

Nurses are often the calm in the middle of uncertainty.

They help families understand medications, mobility concerns, wound care, rehabilitation goals, discharge instructions, and what comes next after a hospital or rehab stay.

They also see the emotional side of aging in real time:

  • Adult children overwhelmed by decisions
  • Spouses exhausted from caregiving
  • Seniors frightened about losing independence
  • Families struggling to navigate healthcare systems

Despite long shifts, staffing shortages, and emotional fatigue, nurses continue showing compassion every single day. Their impact lasts far beyond discharge.

From Florence Nightingale to Today’s Healthcare Heroes

National Nurses Week is celebrated each year from May 6 through May 12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale — the founder of modern nursing.

Known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” Nightingale became famous for caring for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War and helping transform healthcare through hygiene, patient advocacy, and professional nursing practices.

More than 150 years later, nurses continue carrying that same spirit forward.

Hospital-to-Home Starts With Compassion

At Oasis Senior Advisors Austin & Central Texas and Senior Industry Services, we believe successful Hospital-to-Home transitions are built through collaboration.

Nurses are often the first professionals to recognize when a patient may need additional support after discharge — whether that means rehabilitation, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, hospice, home health, caregiver support, or long-term planning resources.

Their advocacy helps families avoid unsafe discharges, caregiver burnout, preventable readmissions, and unnecessary crises.

Thank You to the Nurses of Central Texas

To every nurse serving seniors across Central Texas:

Thank you for the long hours.
Thank you for the patience.
Thank you for the compassion families remember long after the paperwork is gone.

This Nurses Week, we encourage our Central Texas community to take a moment to thank a nurse who made a difference in your life or the life of a loved one.

Happy Nurses Week from all of us at Oasis Senior Advisors Austin & Central Texas and Senior Industry Services.
