Remembering The Ones We Love: The Realities of Funeral Planning

At Senior Industry Services, our goal is to help make Central Texas the best place for seniors to age. To help do that, we work and partner with other senior care companies and providers to help keep families informed and up to date. We are excited to be able to bring you some information directly from an expert in the senior industry who’s been generous enough to discuss the company she works for and how they help serve families and the senior community. Sonia Heath, a community liaison with Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Services, is committed to connection, compassion, community outreach, and answering any questions!

Sonia is also continuing and expanding the Beloved Friends Celebration of Life Program, originally created by Aisha Dull. This meaningful program enables residents who were unable to attend a friend’s funeral service to still celebrate and honor the life of a loved one by hosting a Celebration of Life within their senior care community. Through Sonia’s leadership, the program is growing to reach more residents and communities across Central Texas.

Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Services serves the greater Austin area, offering comprehensive end-of-life care, including traditional funerals, cremation services, and advance planning. Their website emphasizes personalized, culturally inclusive memorials, flexible service options, and compassionate guidance for families before, during, and after loss, including grief support and veteran services.

Grieving a loved one is a challenge in and of itself, but having to plan and manage a funeral service on top of navigating grief can feel overwhelming. Luckily, there are so many incredible funeral services, like Beck, that work with caregivers, families, and senior living communities to help bring remembrance and healing to those in the Central Texas region. Remembering and honoring our friends and loved ones is so important, but it can be hard to figure out how to go about it effectively and in a way that you feel best honors your loved one who has passed. Being able to gather and share memories, reflect, connect, and grieve with others is important. Being able to receive personal and compassionate care when planning for a loved one's memorial is an incredible and thoughtful tool. But it's a tool that often comes with questions, confusion, and a need for guidance. We are happy to provide some answers to some of those questions with help from Sonia, the community liaison with Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

What do families most often misunderstand about funeral services?

Families frequently think funerals are too expensive. In actuality, there are many types of services that can fit into any budget, are very respectful, and can be reflective of each individual's specific celebration of a life well lived. Making prearrangements gives one even greater flexibility, as you can choose how to spread payments out over time, as well as locking current day prices in for something you may not need for many years. This flexibility can also allow you to make thoughtful decisions with less pressure.

What’s a mistake families often make too late?

One of the most common challenges is not coming in to discuss or arrange funeral plans until the last minute. Not only will the entire amount be due when services need to be rendered, but the emotional impact of having to plan an entire funeral very quickly after you have lost someone you love can be devastating. All of this can be avoided by coming in to see us days, weeks, or even years in advance.

When should families reach out, and why sooner rather than later?

Anytime is the right time to reach out for information and quotes on funeral services. There is no downside to gathering information early and having a conversation about needs, wishes, and budget. Planning ahead can also help provide clarity and peace of mind.

What are signs I should start planning?

There aren’t exactly warning signs to help you know when you should start planning, but there are a few key life events that usually trigger planning in the funeral industry. The passing of a parent being is a major one. Planning for a parent's funeral may cause you to naturally look to plan for the other parent or the parents of your spouse. Having your children move out is another big milestone that often makes us think about the future and motivates us to start planning. An illness or death of a friend or family member can act as another reminder of mortality and may trigger a need to examine your own preparedness.

What should families understand before making a decision?

Getting information and making prearrangements is not scary…at least it doesn’t have to be. It can be overwhelming and emotional to discuss, understandably so, but instead of looking at it through the lens of fear, you can view it as a meaningful gift you can give to your loved one. You don’t have to dive in deep; you can start slow and take little steps to learn more information and talk to funeral professionals to help answer any questions and give you peace of mind. Planning in advance is key, as it can help make the process easier and provide financial clarity and ease stress when services are actually needed.

Being able to change the lives of our loved ones is a gift, for them and for us. No one should have to navigate loss alone, so, as difficult as these conversations can be, they are rooted in love, care, and consideration for the people who matter most to us. Taking the time to plan ahead is not just about logistics; it’s about creating space for meaningful remembrance, connection, and healing when it is needed most. At Senior Industry Services, we believe that supporting families through every stage of aging includes helping navigate life’s most challenging moments. We are proud to partner with trusted providers like Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Services to help make these conversations easier for families across Central Texas.
